TYPES OF PAVING:

There are three main types of paving:

1.  Crazy paving: This is any sort of natural or man-made material that is broken up or is broken to be laid.

2.  Slab Paving

3.  Block Paving

TERMS USED:

Formation level: This is the point at which construction starts after excavation.

Sub base: This is the first layer of construction that precedes the base and gives the foundation to the construction.

Base: This is the layer of cement or sand mix that the wearing course is laid on, in effect it is a levelling layer.

Wearing course: This is, as it states, the wearing course, i.e. the paving.

Finished level: This is the level of the surface of the wearing coarse.

MINIMUM SPECIFICATIONS FOR ALL PAVING:

Driveways:

N.B. Some pavings are not suitable for driveways.

Formation level: 250mm below the finished level.

Sub base: 150mm of compacted limestone scalpings or crushed concrete.

Base: 50mm.  Use a sand and cement mix full bed for paving or sharp sand for block paving.

Paths:

Formation level: 175mm below the finished level.

Sub base: 75mm of compacted limestone scalpings or crushed concrete.

Base: 50mm . Use a sand and cement mix full bed for paving or sharp sand for block paving.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENT FOR FALL (WATER DISCHARGING):

1:40 in public areas

1:100 in domestic areas.
