Herbaceous border maintenance PDF Print E-mail

Herbaceous borders are a must in all gardens they offer the best displays of colours in the summer months.  To maintain such a border requires planning. Set out below is a simple guide for the herbaceous border enthusiast.

SUMMER:

Little is required in the summer apart from weeding, applying ties and staking the plants.

AUTUMN – WINTER:

Pruning: Cut down the dead foliage to ground level and rake off the debris.  Weed the area digging out the unwanted perennial weeds.

Lifting: Every three to four years lift large overgrown plants and split into small clumps and replant.  This makes the mature plants more contained.

Mulching: This needs to be of organic matter which is well rotted down and free from weeds.  Firstly, compact the soil around the plants with the ball of the foot not the heel.  Then apply approximately 50mm of organic matter.

N.B. It is a good idea to mark some of the less obvious plants with canes.
